The Energy Group
Transaction – Litigation - Regulatory

Richard M. Lorenzo, Partner
I started life as a nuclear physicist. We have a number of nuclear units right now that we're representing clients on, helping to develop new light water nuclear reactors to produce electricity. We work with a wide variety of energy clients, including investor owned utilities and independent generators. Most of us have worked together for upwards of 15 years.

Frank Lee, Partner
Loeb has a coast-to-coast footprint. We're in L.A., Chicago, New York, and D.C., and so we're able to bring all those resources to bear on any project anywhere in the country.

Gregory J. Blasi, Partner
What makes us a little unique and a little different is that we have a working knowledge and understanding of how a public utility works from the inside, because we're general counsel.

Frank Lee, Partner
All of us in the Loeb Energy Group are transactional/regulatory lawyers.

Jay Matson, Partner
Most firms in the energy space are dealing with deals and transactions or regulatory. We deal with both, and that enables us to handle any issue that might crop up, whether you're talking about a deal where a regulatory issue crops up or a regulatory framework that needs to be accommodated to a deal that may happen in the future.

Frank Lee, Partner
We have recently received approval to open a Beijing office. The China practice has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last several years, and their infrastructure investment is really unparalleled. There's a lot of investment coming out of and going into China in the energy space, and we're really well positioned.

Richard M. Lorenzo, Partner
We want to assist our clients in a multitude of ways. We want them to tell us how they'd like us to work with them. We could take over matters for them completely, or we can work with them and work with their in-house lawyers to help keep legal fees down and also to educate and bring their own lawyers up to speed.

Jay Matson, Partner
The most exciting area in energy law right now is the development of renewable technology and what that will mean for future energy use. In particular, we need to move away from the use of carbon facilities, gas, oil, and more to wind and solar.

Gregory J. Blasi, Partner
It's a fascinating field to be in because you are really helping people keep the lights on, and you're also helping industry function. You don't function without electricity. You don't function without natural gas.

Jay Matson, Partner
I've often been working in the field of regulation at the federal level before the FERC. Lately, I've spent an awful lot of time dealing with the development of transmission and, in particular, the development of interconnection facilities.

Richard M. Lorenzo, Partner
One of the crucial issues facing the industry today is trying to develop a more interconnected transmission system. We work with clients to find innovative solutions to create new high voltage transmission lines, interconnect regions and utilities around the country. It involves finding innovative financing solutions, as well as the regulatory and environmental work necessary to cite and recover the costs for these projects.

Jay Matson, Partner
I like to get down in the trenches with the individuals of the client, roll up my sleeves, learn exactly how their company operates, and then come up with the solution that they need to their problem.

Frank Lee, Partner
When you get what you want, what the client wants, it just makes it that much more rewarding.

Gregory J. Blasi, Partner
What I like most about the job is what I've always liked about the job and the practice of law, which is the intellectual challenge.

Jay Matson, Partner
I view this not just as a job, as a series of issues that need to be solved, but I view this as a relationship.

Richard M. Lorenzo, Partner
What I love most about my job is working with the fine lawyers on our team, as well as working with our clients and their team. The interaction we get, the intellectual stimulation, and the thrill of accomplishment when we successfully prosecute a case or do a deal is worth every bit of this practice.

Jay Matson, Partner
I like the people I work with, both the clients and my colleagues at Loeb. Together I think we make a great team, and we're capable of handling anything.
